Rethinking Teen Mental Health: A Path to Sustainable Healing explores creative, evidence-based solutions for teens and their families who are struggling with mental health issues. Participating mental health and healthcare professionals will experience dynamic, interactive workshops on how to help teens create authentic connections with self, peers, and family. Professionals may earn up to seven continuing education credits.
The Power of Music in Teen Mental Health

Teen Mental Health. Participants will leave the presentation with knowledge about how to
use client centered music experience for connection, wellness, and to reach specific goal areas.
Compassion, Burnout, and Empathic Fatigue: Building Resilience in our Patients and Ourselves
Helping young people succeed includes understanding and managing challenging behaviors while
finding ways to sustain our passion for the work and avoid burnout.
This presentation uses stories and research findings to discuss how to build resilience in adolescents and ourselves,
and how to keep ourselves “in the game” when working with children with challenging behavior.
The Meal as Medicine
This presentation will explain how to use the process of cultivating, preparing, serving, and enjoying our food as a fundamental aid in recovery. Participants will learn guiding principles for
nourishment, food, the kitchen, hospitality, and the meal. Discussion of the meal plan used at
Newport Academy will demonstrate the connection of proper nutrition and healing.
We will then all participate in making our own lunch!
Attachment-Based Family Therapy: Strengthening Family Cohesion
Attachment-Based Family Therapy (ABFT) is a manualized, empirically informed and
supported, family therapy model specifically designed to target family and individual processes associated with adolescent suicide and depression. However, ABFT can improve general family risk and protective factors associated with youth struggling with trauma, eating disorders, and anxiety.
ABFT emerges from interpersonal theories suggesting adolescent mental health can be
precipitated exacerbated or buffered against by the quality of interpersonal family relationships. Tested with diverse families, including low-income, minority families, single and divorced parents, it is a trust-based, emotion-focused psychotherapy model aiming to repair interpersonal ruptures and rebuild an emotionally protective, secure-based, parent-child relationship. The therapy model is trauma and process focused yet provides structure, and focus over a short time frame (12 to 16 weeks). Treatment is characterized by five treatment tasks: a) reframing the therapy to focus on interpersonal relationships b) building alliance with the adolescent, c) building alliance with the parents, d) facilitating conversations to resolve attachment ruptures and e) promoting adolescent autonomy and competency.
In this workshop, Dr Levy will use lecture, case studies and video review to provide an overview of the theoretical principles, research support, and clinical strategies for ABFT. Dr. Levy will review how attachment theory, emotional regulation, and trauma resolution inform the delivery of this treatment approach. She will review the goals and
structure of the five treatment tasks that provide a roadmap for delivering this
interpersonally focused psychotherapy effectively and rapidly.
